From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a wide array of heroes, and a thrilling plot featuring celestial beings, evil spirits, and malevolent powers expanding in influence within Dol-Makjar.
Note: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season are included.
The Warrior Group Introduced
Episode 3 finished on a major cliffhanger and presented the first table of characters who will split off from the central cast to undertake their independent quest, distinct from the remaining groups.
The Soldiers table features Teor Pridesire (played by Travis Willingham), the agile character (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).
Why Split the Party?
Considering a large ensemble, it was obvious from the start that keeping everyone at one table would be impossible.
That’s why, the opening chapters of the new season serve as an Overture, connecting the personal journeys before dividing into three distinct groups: Fighters, Strategists, and Explorers.
What Defines the Soldiers Table
As described by the DM, the warrior group is for players who are drawn to a typically action-packed fight-heavy gameplay experience where diplomatic options are rare.
Upon first impression, figures such as the reluctant priest Wicander might appear mismatched, but the actions of episode 3 show why these particular heroes are best suited for the warrior group.
Motivations for Departure
For one thing, the group has a clear idea where to go next after a violent initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.
Casimir of Thjazi—whose death started the story’s plot—used the foes for his own means, breaking into the hidden lair, attacking Thimble, and stealing all the magical artifacts to dispose of.
Casimir then settled his debts and fled to a secure base in the remote area, above the urban center, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.
Character Drivers
Secondly, each character has a individual motive to leave the city Dol-Makjar:
- The rogue, as the close ally and closest confidant, desires retribution.
- Kattigan knows Timmony and cautions that it is a dangerous environment.
- The strong character and The cleric, having resisted his house’s orders to kill the fighter and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
- But, their status as important members in House Halovar could enable the team access places they normally couldn’t.
- Moreover, Teor pledged a eternal obligation to The savior for his salvation and will now accompany him anywhere.
Fugitives
Finally, all of them are sought by the powers that control Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making staying in the city dangerous:
- The agile adventurer and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
- The strong figure and Wicander betrayed the powerful family and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
- The fighter is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.
This means them little choice but to journey toward the remote area in pursuit of the traitor.
What’s Next?
