The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a prominent prize-giving event draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
